SUNRISE co-host David Koch doesn't mind if people think he's dorky but believes it's important not to pretend to be something he's not.

Cuddly ... David Koch says people try to hug him in the street.

1.Do you mind often being described as "dorky"?

Well ... my kids reckon I'm dorky. But you know, I'm a person with a sense of humour like everybody else. It might be a daggy sense of humour - I don't know. It's just something I've always had. And to do three hours of live television every day, my philosophy is that you cannot pretend to be something you're not. You can't lie to your audience and say "I'm this really flash bloke or swish bloke". What you see is what you get and that's what I think works on the show. With all four of us - Mel (Doyle), Nat (Barr), Mark Beretta and myself - what you see is what you get. We actually like each other and have similar senses of humour. I'm almost old enough to be Nat and Mel's father but we have a great time.

2. When you had a cameo as a "loser" Elvis impersonator on All Saints, your daughter told you to be yourself. Do your kids give you a hard time?

They do but (with the cameo role) that's one of the things that lots of people dream about doing. When people ask you, you think, "Gee, I wonder what that'd be like?" and you give it a go. You may never get asked to do it ever again ... and I won't after that performance. But opportunities like that is what Sunrise is great for. A lot of people might worry about what people might think of them but I think, "Bugger it".

3. Would you ever do any other guest roles?

Oh yeah - too right. I think I'd want to be some sort of sex sym ... no. Not a sex symbol. My kids are huge Home And Away fans though. I'd love to surprise them one day and do Home And Away. I'd jump at that if I was asked.

4. You could be one of Alf's mates.

Exactly right. "Bloody kids!" I reckon I could do that really well (laughs).

5. You have a very down-to-earth approach on TV - I imagine people have no qualms approaching you off-screen.

No - they come up all the time: "Kochie, how are you mate?" and you're thinking, "Holy hell - where do I know you from?" and then in the conversation they'll say, "You don't know me. We've never met but I wake up with you every morning".

I've been doing the finance stuff for years and years and years and all of a sudden, this thing called Sunrise has really taken off.

So in the last two years our viewers are so familiar and so passionate that they literally do run up and hug you.

Teenage girls will just race up to you and give you a big hug - it's almost as if you're their de facto dad sort of thing.

It is really special and really sweet ... but it's also really weird. I've never had anyone be really narky to me. They've always just been terrific.

6. Did you really give financial advice to Shannon Noll? It sounds too good to be true

(Laughs) Well he asked about the sharemarket and property.

It's funny - when people come on the show, as we go to the commercial breaks, they then say, "Now Kochie, I've got these shares" or "What do you think of the sharemarket? My accountant is saying ... ".

So that sort of thing often happens. But I never give direct advice because you can't. I see that as a bit unethical so I say, "Look, you know, this is what everyone is saying at the moment. Watch out here". All that sort of stuff.

7. How are you adjusting to all the people peering in at the new studios in Martin Place? Do you have to keep the back of your head really shiny now?

Yeah (laughs). We have to have backlights and stuff like that (laughs).

No, not really but it's a matter of knowing when to have people in the background and when not to. With serious interviews, you can't so we've refined it now but it's just another way to connect with (the viewers).

It's the next step. And how many people come to Sydney on holidays is staggering - they just come from everywhere (to see the show). We take it for granted but for them to see a working studio is a real buzz.

For us, it's terrific too because hopefully they'll go back and tell 10 friends that they had a great time coming and doing the show.

8. Have you ever been to New York to check out the filming of NBC's Today show in the Rockefeller Plaza?

No, I haven't actually been. (Channel Seven's executive chairman) Kerry Stokes is a huge fan of it though. In fact, when he and (wife) Christine go on holidays, he often goes down as part of the crowd.

Does he hold up a sign? (Laughs) Maybe he could hold one up saying "I love Sunrise".
